They have always been the symbol of beauty and love and for decades been the inspiration for many romantic legends. The ancient Greeks identified the rose with their Goddess of love Aphrodite and the Romans used them to carpet the floor to celebrate great events, floating them in their wine, methinks Shakespeare expressed it best when he penned the words that Juliet spoke unto Romeo in his timeless tale, "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Yes folks, the intoxicating rose has been immortalised by songwriters, poets and artists alike throughout the ages.

Valentine’s Day roses are protocol for your loved one as they are sent to express passion, love and desire so this should be at the forefront of your mind when picking flowers for your lover.  There are many variations of roses and you can make your gift more meaningful if you chose a colour that conveys a specific message.

Red roses – Love, passion and desire

Yellow roses – Platonic friendship

White roses – Truth and innocence

Lilac or purple roses – Love at first sight or enchantment

Coral/orange roses – Desire and passion

Pink roses – Expressing appreciation and gratitude

Now that you have an idea of what the meaning is behind the gesture, visit your local florist, call or go online for the great deals available to you. Make sure you know what you want and that your requirements are met. Be specific about how many roses you require to be in the bouquet, if you prefer them to be presented wrapped in a box or in a vase; the message on the card is also to be dictated by you. The florists may try to flog you extra’s for an additional £4.99 or so, be careful as the extra’s could look cheap and therefore ruin the effect of the roses.
